Default reshell registration help

alright fellas,im in the middle of doing a reshell, but want to know the LEGAL way of registering.

basically my cars shell is fubarred to the max with rot, so ive bought a very mint shell on a Y plate where as mine is an A plate.
the original shell has a private plate which i want to keep ,but the original cars last lot of tax and mot ran out in june 06

the new shell needs paint but im undecided as to which colour to go for

what i want to know,is what is the legal way of doing things??? i dont want the car to be Q-plated but everything bar the shell and engine are going to be off the original car etc,and new for old parts as and where reqd

ive been told i can do a change of chassis no on the logbook to coincide with the old cars registration, but im not 100% sure, and dont wanna get screwed in the end

any help will be muchly appreciated

cheers
stu

Ditto you can ONLY use the ID from the shell you are using NOT the ID from the old car. If you use the old shells ID it's classed as ringing and the DVLA can take you car and crush it worse case!!!

If I have read it right you are re-shelling your car using a second hand shell and putting your mechanical parts into the said shell? If that's the case and you declare it to the DVLA you will be having a Q plate, no arguement 100% Q

I agree BUT as he is asking about legalities then what you suggest falls short of being legal

I use to do lots of car builds back in Uk years ago and yes it is as Martin says. Second hand shell used and declared to DVLA = Q every time.
Hence most people use the paper work to go with the second hand shell.

And the only way to keep the private plate is to repair the "A" plate, get it MOT'd and taxed then put the reg. onto retention, otherwise you've lost it.

And if you've bought the "Y" plate shell without I.D then you may have difficulty getting a V.5 for it (depends on it's history) and end up a Q plate.

very true im afraid, what will happen is when you come to remove the plate from the y reg car you ahve rung into a A reg car DVLA due to it being a old car will request a inspection,,, when they inspect it they will realise its a ringer and then you not only loose the car as steve says by it being crushed you will also loose the plate anyway

No problem with that as the new shell is worth the same 5 points as the original..

Bent as in damaged, not Stolen, gets to keep the original reg.

You have to have paperwork to back it all up to prove it's a BRAND NEW shell or that'll be on a Q plate as well....

So does this guy need to apply for the log book to see if it arrives and if there are any issues for the Y plater.

If all clear, swap all the bits over and just MOT and tax the car as normal keeping the Y registration/ID

Declare the A plater as scrapped and put the private plate on retention, or have it put onto the Y plate?

What do people do if they replace floor pans in an old car and so in turn loos the id numbers stamped in the floor??
