escort gti lowering

I have just put a set of 17s on my 1997 gti with 205 40s but now needs to be lowered? been looking at just a set of springs to drop it a bit. whats a safe height to go.
any pics would be good to.

-40mm should be fine... I had those size tyres on my GTi and had no issues at all
