Default 8 series

What do people think of them? Old mans car, or smart? I have always liked the look of them and saw this....

http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/275114.htm

I think it seems a quite reasonable price considering their price new! Anyone had any experience with them? Is the 840ci quick? Dont see many knocking about. I thinks its quite cool.

I had a feeling parts/servicing etc would be a bit steep! Suprised at brakes being bad though!

Apart from that was it a nice drive?

4.4. 840 sport is the one to get.

They use the 8 series calipers on the E36's, are a great upgrade, but suppose the 8 series weighs twice as much

Cool looking cars, but is a 60k car, will be terrible to run, and if you're unlucky empty your pockets big time

Tempting cars for the money though

i wanted one a while back, went to look at a 750i instead tho and the fella put me right off the 8 series, he'd had many bad experiences with them having owned a few... theyre prone to catch fire mainly due to the fact that it has all the same electronics, engine, gearbox etc as the 7 series but in a car half the size!!!

lot of car for the money tho and they do look phat in red with nice 5 spokes on...

A lot of people slag off the M3's brakes, I love them.
Never tracked it, but is a road car to be fair with standard brakes.
They don't seem keen to put more than one piston in a caliper on the 3's though lol.

God knows what the 8's weigh - quick google 1900 kg's for the 850

My Dad had an 8-series.

Was nothing but problems, sump gasket, brake sphere, ABS, it just went on and on.

Although it was a lovely car!

I know what you mean! never really properly drove one on the road but trying to get one to stop at even low speed is an effort, gotta press the pedal hard!

Cheers for the info guys...
From the sounds of it, they seem to go wrong quite often.. I want a car for daily use with loads of comfort so cant be arsed with having to fix it every 2mins!!. I thought one of these would be good as there quite rare and look well comfy! Shame.

Looks like its gonna be a 5 series then

do not get the 850 V12. I've seen many cases of the coils failing which means one side of the engine will not be firing so you will only be running on 6 cylinders. That and other bad electronic faults.

the 840 has the mroe reliable engine and this came from a mechanic not me.

Both M60's.

But there are different versions.

4.0 and 4.4.

Here Here - Best car I have ever owned. Period!

E39 - the BEST BMW ever made, from an engineering perspective its such a perfect piece of machinery.

Great looks and a great drive too. The diesel variant (530d) has what was at the time, a world class leading diesel lump, and its still in production today with the latest 5 and 3 series BMW´s - perfect

That would be the Nikasil problems.

New block time!

They were OK unless you kept moving it short distances, in and out the garage etc.
