Not a common fault no!

is it different if it's hot or cold?

My gearbox almost seized last year when the prat that owned it before me must have kept crunching reverse in. Binds up the 1st gear to housing gap and makes it appear siezed. Worse when hot.

Yep, I killed 2 gearboxes on my old 1.7 puma by being "enthusiastic" I killed more clutches than boxes though
