ello mate
tis bollocks i done 800miles a day 5 or 6 days a week for 6 weeks 52p a mile per parcel okay if you take 2 or 3 but you normally get one at a time for the first 3-4weeks.
you only get paid on the way out unless you hang about and collect on the way back. but then you miss getting in the que for the next parcel at the depo!!
I could have stayed at home and made more money
seriously i went self employed and made about 200ish profit in 6 weeks after fuel, insurance and van costs
and trying to get a van hire company's that's not gonna cane you cos it's for multi-drop, my van i got mileage was at about 45kish i gave it back at 67k he went bonkers and charged me £400 for a headlamp.
crap job will not do again
and the controlller's another story
the best 1 i found was owner driver for business post - profit related earnings and all that i'd get all my mates to use me to bump up me money. But it's 7 days you have to supply your own holiday cover.
gimme a bell if you wanna chat about it.
Cheers

Funny you mention this now m8 because im just finishing my business plan to present to the bank to start nearly the same thing.
Iv'e been doing various driving jobs for years now and have a few m8's who do this and they seem to do pretty well for themselves though starting seems pretty tough (just need to find plenty of permanant contracts or lots of one off jobs).
Biggest cost to start up would be a van of course (lease or contract hire new, or buy second hand) but the newer the better to attract potential client's.
Hope you start it ok m8!

one of the guys left work with some redundancy and set up doing this.
seems to be doing quite well... im sending him wales tomorrow for me... he will charge me about £360 I think.
you need your name in and accounts set up with companies to get some business. there are quite alot of firms setting up.
he also has storage facilities which is something that is useful to us. e.g. i expect this for example.... pick up at 5pm..... and deliver first thing next morning at 7:30am.... so if you have a van full that means no more jobs in the evening.... or you have to unload somewhere - quite trickyt id say

I was an owner driver for viking direct (stationary equipment) had a lwb transit which i leased was a brilliant job but hard graft i used to do 65 drops a day @ £3.75 per drop 5 days a week plus every other saturday morning
you need to get git insurance and a commercial insurance policy on your van plus you need a newish van upto 6 years old or you wont get much work from the courier companies
Another thing you can try is make up some business cards and take them round to all the local haulage firms you would be surprised how many calls you get late afternoon for rush jobs collecting the odd pallet
