jaguar x type owners!
Not very good on fuel, sweet handling, shit brakes
. Lots of car for very little money now
. The 3.0 litre one is the one to go for in my opinion, as it's quoite a big (heavy) car, so the 2.5 feels underpowered. Is 4x4 (bar the 2.0litre ones), so a good winter car if you can afford the fuel bills (20mpg).

I had an 03-reg 3.0 for 10 months
my dad had a 51-reg 2.5 for nearly 5 years
not a single fault with either of them. Handling was superb. Neither felt hugely quick, but both had plenty of power. I averaged 28mpg in the 3.0, my dad averaged 34mpg in the 2.5. That's without ragging it, but included plenty of A and B road overtaking bursts and 85-90mph motorway cruising speeds generally
superb cars, extremely well made, not very exciting though

Alex,
You sure you're not getting X-types and S-types confused again
.
Next you'll be saying the Mondeo handles crap (of which the X-type shares it's platform)

the jags i've been looking at are around £5-£6k so not that bad for a 2002 jag with 50-60k miles on the clock!
Ive been in them all, i found the 2.2 TD the best, it is Fords DuraTorq Engine after all, the 2.5 V6 was terribly slow, completely strangled by the friendly emission rules of today.
In all not a bad car, they have their faults like other cars, but if i were buying one, id go for a fully loaded Diesel one.

Always makes me laugh when people say its just a mondeo. Yes it has the same/similar platform! Hardly the same car now is it, looks different, drives different, handles different, different interior.

are we all talking about the same thing? handling or roadholding?
imo handling is a description of how the car feels to drive, how it reacts to inputs, surface changes, camber changes etc. some people like a car to steer from the rear, some to be nuetral etc. it's purely subjective so no one person can be right
road holding is how much lateral grip it can generate
Alex,
You would have to be a fool to take the Jags around a track and expect them to be as nimble as a Mini
. However, on the road, they are as sweet handling as the Mondeos (strangley enough
). The brakes don't inspire any confidence and the front dives quite a lot, but cornering and ride feel is really nice IMO.
Regarding the AWD system, the diesels and 2.0 litre petrols are just FWD AFAIACR
.
Auto's are for old people and Phil anyway, so avoid them like the plague

I would expect the handeling to be safe and predicatble...
even somthing as simple as a lane change feels awful and the car reacts very badly to steering under braking.
all IMO of course.
We can agree on the brakes though... Jag brakes are well, Jag brakes!

I wouldn't have an Auto anyway, and don't no much about the autbox
Auto in my dad's old XJR was seriously tough, but I wouldn't have an Auto in anything 3.0 or under
They've just introduced a new facelifted model, so second-hand prices may be about to take a bit more of a tumble
