unlikely EGR removal is the problem......doesn't really do anything in that respect.

Injectors working?

on my old 1992 xr3i i tried disconnecting the egr on it and it wouldnt start and i even tried running the engine and disconevcting the multi plug and it would just die but i am sure there must be a way of getting around it. i did it on my rs 2000 with no probs

Presumably you are blocking off the connections the EGR previously used?

is there any leaks on the inlet side of things though, even if the exhaust manifold wasnt blanked off i would expect it to run but obviously it would sound like a bag of nails!

No engine requires EGR to run there must be something else at fault

it wont be the egr valve. you will have knocked or disconnected something while doing the egr. check all the connections, pipes etc around where you were working.
oh.... and learn to spell!!
