Default my Golf VR6 wont idle ?? any ideas ??

had it a few months and its been fine . locked it away the other nite and didnt use it the next day .went to it the following day . started it and it just died . it wont tick over or idle ??? i can hold the throttle done and it purrs no probs . i can hold the revs as low as 800 and it still fine but the minute i release the throttle completely it dies ?? let it warm up for a few mins with my foot on the gas and still dies ??

left it a couple of days and still the same ?? tried it earlier and still does it ??

just wondered if there was something that i could look at myself before booking it in to be looked at ??

cheers peeps

i only sold the turbo to get something more realiable ha ha ha

clean out the throttle body! they're pretty straight forward to remove but can be done in place.

What year is it? if it's a N plate or later - OBDII - [oval side repeaters] then it doesn't have a idle sped control valve it's all contained within the throttle body with a stepper motor which controls the butterfly in the throttle body. Older ones could be the same but i *think* they have a seperate iscv but i don't know.

remove the air intake pipe, then using carb cleaner, or similar, electrical contact cleaner, petrol, brake cleaner etc, work the throttle and clean all the shit out of it.

you can remove the throttle body easily enough, four torx bolts, disconnect throttle cable, electrical connection and the 2 water pipes. think you'll also have to remove the rear engine top cover so will need to disconnect ht leads from coil-pack end [less likely to break] and unbolt the cover [multi-spline headed bolts]

pull out the ashtray and see if the plastic bit above the lighter socket slides out, if so and it has the 16-pin diagnostic plug in there it's a OBD II
