play.com is very cheap. problem is they arent open to all networks, and some new phones can cost up to 30 quid to open to all networks.

"ive found this web site that can do it for a tenner"

try it. phones are my forte, and i know these web sites dont work as people come in my shop complaining about them lol.

and NO, that bloke down the market charging a fiver can NOT open the new models of sony's and nokias etc for a fiver. it costs 3-4 times that TRADE pride even when buying the codes in bulk, even then some phones have to be sripped down to 'test point' them to unlock them.

car phone warehouse are cheap, and most phones are GSM, sim free.

prices are good aswell.

you could also get one of their 'clearance' phones, basically 14 day returns from people who've got them on contract and brought them back unused etc

for all new sony's, including k800i, k810i, w850i, w950i, w880i etc there are 4 types of firmware, each firmware requires differing amounts of server codes to unlock. there server codes are expensive (ie. circa 4-5 pounds each, with some phones needing 6 codes and thats me buying them 1000 at a time )

the firmware's are CID49, CID50, CID51, CID52.

the 49, 50 and 51 firmware's are quite easy to unlock and only require 3, maximum 4 codes. CID52's need reflashing THEN 6 codes applying, adding to the already expensive unloking cost...

unfortunately 95% of w880i's are CID52's...

40.00 including labour to unlock

i strongly recommend a Sony W580i...same features as w880i, lovely little slide up phone, very tempted myself, circa 140 notes sim free.

can get them in black/gun metal grey etc

Have a play with a 880 before you get one.

I have one, and it's a real love it or hate it phone.

The phone itself is tiny which is great, especially as every Nokia that people rave about seems to be the size of a brick and weight about the same, but the buttons are also small on the 880 which can make texting a little slower than usual.

no need for smiley mate

i know iain and he was directing me to a phone unlock shop in town!

Anyways i went to the other 1 just now and the guy says he can do it for £25. I said i'd heard it was a pain to do and he says it can take longer but its fine. He wants 2-3 days to do it like.

Rich
I know what you mean about new nokias! they are fuckin massive and i hate that! I want the w880 cos its a wee phone. I know buttonsetc are wee but i'm sure i'll live with it.

So now i want a silver one and it has to be unlocked or a decent price to consider. grrr.
