any laptop you buy nowadays will be up to the job of what youre after, theyre all pretty good in the 300-500 quid bracket.

wireless tinternet will set you back about 25-50 quid depending on what router you buy.

Simple case of plugging the router in instead of your current modem, then you can connect wirelessly. really is as easy as it sounds

so buy a heavy duty toshiba one

also forgot to say, forget all the bollocks about core duo and that fancy 2 core stuff, try and get a Pentium Centrino M, the battery life is far superior as it slows the processor down when its not required i get about 4-5hrs browsing pf etc before i need to plug it into the mains.

www.ebuyer.com

or EuroPC

Basic laptop will do you, 512mb RAM if windows XP, 1gb minimum if running Vista.

Acer's arent too bad, steer clear of any of the PC world own brand shite like Advent, E-Machines etc etc

I swear by HP personally, i've got an hp business notebook from work thats the dogs bollocks but a bit out of your price range, but the lower spec models will do you just fine (presario range etc etc)

Steer clear of anything Celeron also, theyve got fuck all cache so run like shit. Centrino or AMD Turion are the way to go.

As for wireless, sky, orange, BT etc will all give you a free wireless router when you sign up or migrate your current ADSL service to them. If your on Cable, but a Linksys WRT54G off ebay for £40 and its job done

ive recently got a Dell XPS M1330 which replaced my Acer 1522 wlmi (AMD 64 3000+)

its got 2.4 ghz Core 2 Duo T7700
2048 MB DDR2
160 ghz
8x DVD+/-
Nvidia GeForce 8400M GS
Dimensions (W x H x D) 318x25x238mm
Weight 1.8 kg

great lappy imho.

Best lappys out there imho are Dell XPS and Apple books.... Sony, Toshiba have great screens but shitty specifications for the price.
Acer is a typical German product does everything you need but a little over engineered and heavy

Asus I dislike as they turn to lego soon as they are dropped.. i like a lappy that can take some abuse

Advent is PC-worlds shite and really really really poor battery life, if its connected to the mains all day its worth considering if you actually need a laptop i would not look at it.

Very cheep laptops usually suffer from poor battery life and small slow hard disks from my opinion..

If your on a budget call Dell... they do a great bang for any amounts of buck

http://www.pcworld.co.uk/martprd/sto...&category_oid=

i bought this one Monday in staples (cheaper in there than PC world £400 in the Sale! I got mine tho for £300 as they made a cock up at the till, meaning they had too sell me it at that price...Result)

Can strongly recommend it tho, actually looking at the one on PCW, it comes with Vista Home Premium, Mine came with Basic, i dunno what the difference is but i know i wont use all that crap on windows anyway.

I bought a Belkin N1 Modern Rotutor £130 (seems to be cheaper now & i only bought the cunt Tuesday) but it was the best one i could find in PCW, you just simply put your current ISP username & Pasword inn & your now Wireless, Shit hot

Also treated myself to a new set of Speakers for it, as Laptop ones are crap lol

hope this helps

You paid £130 for a wireless router? Holy fucking shit

And a Belkin at that

"The best one i could find in PC world"

most expensive doesnt necessarily mean best, it's probably a 108mbps one, which your laptop wont support anyway

Take out broadband with AOL through carphone warehouse from 19.99 and get a free dell 1520 laptop.

I went to sign up today but the exchange is to far away from my house so its 29.99 a month.

Go to the www.carphonewarehouse.co.uk

My mate(who is an IT Tec) sugguested This one or a a navagotr(spl) one which only did 108mbps, but i dont only use the router for my Laptop, Online gaming too & Mine is 300mbps!. 300M Range IIRC.

What i should of said tho, it was the best spec'd one they had in the shop at the time, Another friend recommend this router too..

If your laptop supports anything higher than 54g i'll be surprised.....unless you spent £4-bazillion quid on a belkin 108mbps wireless card to go with it

Whats the point in spending more money on a 108mbps setup when your broadband isnt going to be anywhere near that fast, so it doesnt matter what speed your connected to your router at, you cant download webpages any faster can you?

The only benefit of 108mbps is internal file transfer speed between the machines on your local LAN. When to be honest, 54g does just fine. My xbox streams AVI movies on my £40 linksys wireless 54g network just fine

repeat after me

dont. buy. things. from. p. c. world.

I really rate Dell Pete, and i certainly wouldnt buy from PCworld either tbh.

Other than Dell, Id go for Samsung or Sony and dont touch Acer.
