I had to take the centre console out of my Escort 1.8TD 1993 to replace the handbrake switch, and to do this I had to remove the gear knob. I twisted this off and it destroyed the rubber inside the knob. This left a plastic piece on top of the gear lever with circular ribs on it. I bought a new gear knob but this seems different inside to the old one - do I just have to force the old plastic piece off the gear lever so I can push the new gear knob on?
