Default ACT Xtreme Duty Clutch - anyone any info / opinions ?

the Exedy organic has started slipping on my Evo after 8500 miles, with only 1 hard launch attempted in this lifespan, never repeated because it didnt like it and slipped like a bitch!

looking for something thats gonna last a little longer, i also plan on tuning the engine (stroker kits sat in my garage) so could do with something that will hold a bit more torque

the ACT Xtreme Duty Clutch Kit holds (636ft/lbs)

this sounds great but does anyone have any experience of it? eg... what theyre like for daily driving? heavy i imagine, due to the high clamping force.

are they as good as they sound... for the money £250-300 + £150-200 for a billet flywheel they seem like a good option.

they do it in a few different guises... organic style friction sprung plate, 6 paddle sprung plate and 6 paddle unsprung plate too... decisions decisions

any info much appreciated

and yes, i have asked about this on the MLR still awaiting a response.

Right - how seriously do you want to do this sir?

Ultimate in Evo clutches are the carbon/carbon options from Exedy and Tilton. You'll not notice a difference in pedal feel to a standard clutch and they will take any abuse you throw at them including full launch capability.

The tilton is a full race clutch and while we've done 3 Time Attack rounds, TOTB and a weekend of drag at Santa Pod - we're already nearly out of life with it...

The Exedy version is slightly lesser rated - however - we've fitted one to a customers car that's used for nothing but hill climbing - and he does full bore launches every time in it. No problems to date.

Both manufacturers do a cerametallic version (twin plate) and they are ok - noisy and bity - but ok...

Tilton package offers a hydraulic release bearing conversion too which helps the pedal feel massively!

Are evos cable clutch as standard then? Bloodyhell, didnt expect that!

Deffo go for a twin plate at least, cant comment on make as i dont know, but with one of them, a hydro clutch sounds a good look for deffo, too...

No

But standard Evos run a pull style release bearing - the tilton converts to a push which in my humble opinion is FAR superior

Should have been clearer.

In my defence - i am shitfaced

can the twin plate clutch setups be rebuilt when theyre worn out or do they need casting in the bin and a new one bought?

the only one ive seen described as rebuildable is the RPS Carbon/Carbon, at a cost of only $400 which is a big bonus imo, only thing is the initial cost of the clutch is rather high

also how do the twin plate clutches last if driven in traffic/town type situations regularly?

also its for an Evo 5, i know the later Evo's (7/8/9) had a larger clutch/flywheel and i was looking to upgrade, is it simply a case of buying a clutch/flywheel combo for a later Evo and bolting it on?

cheers for the help/opinions

Tiltons and Exedys can both be rebuilt easily enough with just new plates.

We've used RPS stuff in the past - the old clutches had a tendancy to shatter the carbon plates at high rpms - we've just fitted a new style on to a customers car - so i'll let you know how that goes!

Yep - just get a later flywheel - although the tiltons/exedys come with new flywheels in the package.

Don't get a fidanza one though - they get chewed up and fucked quick smart!

i begrudge giving any money for another Exedy clutch, this is the 2nd Exedy organic ive had in not too many miles, the twin plate may well be better but id prefer another brand.

since hearing that the tilton can be rebuilt im a lot more interested, especially since its drastically cheaper than the RPS clutch i was reading about yesterday. How much would it cost to rebuild the Tilton? is it a simple case of unbolting the frictional material from the flywheel and then slipping new plates into the clutch assembly?

also a shame you didnt fit the RPS clutch to that customers car a few months ago, wouldve had the results by now if you had done

cheers

Gary runs an Exedy Compe-R lightweight Twin Plate in his Evo and it is excellent, although it is around £1500 here in the UK as far as I remember.

On anything but a standard car, a 'conventional' clutch won't last, we rarely fit 'Organics' or 'Paddles'. OK, so multiplate clutches are expensive, welcome to Evo ownership!!

Also, don't shut Exedy out just on account of a bad experience with a clutch that really wasn't ever going to be up to the job! You're lucky frankly that it lasted that long!

Also, I can't see what the RPS has that any of the other 'conventional' clutches don't have, so cannot see it really being any better.

Rebuilding the tiltons isn't a big job mate - i've done one or two.

Its just getting to it and getting it apart that takes a few hours - that said - i can have an evo box on the floor in an hour
