there is a fix if yours has been modified but its a ball ache
what you have to do is take everyone apart so your down to the mother board etc
then you need to take the heatsink
once this is off you power the machine up until the solder starts to turn to liquid again and turn it off
well thats hw my mates fixes them anyhow i think
and hes repaired about 4 now
as the xbox gets that hot the solder melts and when cools down again there is a crack in the solder joint so it doesnt mae connection hence the 3 red lights
im sure theres a something on the net somewhere to tell you exactly what to do and fix it

I hate having to turn mine on always wonder if the red ring of death is going to happen.
I run my with the fan, runs alot smoother i found. If i play mine its only for a couple hours at the most really.

had 5 xbox360 in 2years
good when it works but reliability is dire.
an unofficial poll registered 44,000 uk people
reporting xbox360 failures, and thats not including
people who didn't take part!

due to the excesssive heat build up the board tends to flex cracking the solder connections..
all because there is not enough support for the actual pcb ...
if you are good with a soldering iron and a very small tip then worth having a go if microsoft say bugger off...
would never run a chip without a heatsink though get it too hot and its fooked
if he can melt solder by letting it get that hot
would love to have a go at repairing one though
