get an HP/Compaq model, rock solid, good value for money

Don't buy a Vaio, shite, overpriced, stupid reflecty screen, come with loads of shite software installed, hard to get parts for...the list of reasons not to buy one is as long as your arm.

I work for an IT reseller/support company, we support thousands of laptops, and it's usually the sony ones we have problems with.

Don't buy anything with a Celeron chip in it either, utter waste of time

Good advice above, if you stick to that you cant go far wrong
Although if you only have a couple of high street shops to pick from your not going have alot to choose

there's the usual places on the hih street to be honest, but you'll be paying over the odds. if you dont mind, then currys (dixons), pc world, staples etc, argos probably sell them too.

i'll see if i can see anything of decent spec.

To be honest, if it's only for web browsing, you probably don't even need to spend as much as £500 mate.

I've never known anything so flimsy and unreliable as a Sony Vaio. Performance isn't great either.

512mb will be fine for vista basic, i had ultimate running on an athlon 3200 with 512mb DDR and it was fine. Only thing it struggled with was dvd maker, as that thrashes the nuts off it. that isnt included with vista basic anyway. I've now got athlon 64 with 1gb running ultimate and it flies

1GB would be preferable but for web browsing and general messing about it'll be fine. you can always buy an additional stick and bang it in there.

that will be the shite drivers for your wireless card, not a problem with vista.

I've got Vista PC and laptop running on wireless with not a single issue.

Pc has an ABit PCI-X wireless card in it (which dogsmoke (above) also has running on vista with no problems), and laptop has Broadcom 802.11 b/g chips....not had a single issue with it.

Update your drivers.

I'm in the "IT Game" and the only problems with Vista i've found are the stupid user account control thing, an issue after installing itunes when your cdrom's disappear out of device manager (fixed in latest itunes) and problems with third party software, which is hardly microsofts fault.

Beta's have been out for ages, and if third party software houses havent bothered to test and fix their software it's their own fault. Yet everyone blames Vista for the fact that some flaky shitty bit of XP software doesnt work with Vista.

shite for email? err.... what?

If you are using windows mail that's just a slightly less shit version of Outlook Express, which in all honesty, was shite too.

Though if your wireless isn;t working, your email won't work either...funny that

dunno why everyone is dissing vaio, i love 'em and wouldn't buy anything less, but having said that i doubt you'd get one for the stated £500 anyway

don't like vista myself, would rather still have XP, especially if it means the laptop costs less

I install servers and networks for small/medium businesses and the stability issues are with 3rd party software, such as accounting packages (Sage, Opera, Quickbooks etc), BACS packages, bespoke business apps etc. If the people who wrote this software and pulled their fingers out and done proper beta testing these issues wouldnt be as serious.

A big problem i've found is with account packages that create invoices using a PDF printer (like MS office image write type thing)

Vista doesn't support kernel drivers, which these virtual pdf printers use. Amyuni are soon to sort this but the software packages have to include these updates before the problems get fixed
