Default Oil temperature sender location

Where is the best place to put an oil temp sender?

I was thinking of putting it in the sump, would that be OK, or more to the point would it give a good representation of oil temps there?

That is where I have put some in the past.
It is only a representation of an average as it can never be correct all the time, it is cooler in the sump but hotter by the time it gets to the top etc as it has soaked up the heat.

I've used an adaptor so that it goes in the drain plug hole.

Have seen most located in the sump either by welding a boss in or via the drain plug.

it does but you have to modify your existing thread as its too long for the new adaptor

need to chop off about 2 threads
