40 cars seized in crackdown

SIX people were arrested and 42 cars seized in a police crackdown on dodgy drivers.

In the first operation led by police community support officers, 60 officers took to the streets of Bootle last night targeting uninsured, untaxed and anti-social drivers.

The officers did the planning, reconnaissance and investigation work, before going to 500 streets to see which are the worst affected by drivers who tear around in illegal, noisy and high-powered cars.

Police were joined by officers from the DVLA, Port of Liverpool Police, Sefton council and HM Revenue & Customs.

Supt John Myles from the anti-social behaviour Axis team said: “I am proud of the work undertaken by the team's community support officers.

“PCSOs are a welcome addition to Merseyside's extended police family, and the positive impact that they have on the communities they serve more than justifies the level of investment.”

The operation began just after 6pm with a briefing at Seaforth Docks and ended just after midnight.

Sixty people were stopped and searched, and three given police cautions for possessing cannabis.

The operation could be repeated across Merseyside in the near future.
