I recently replaced my old pads (nearly run down to the metal! ) with some new ones from halfords, the fit, everything went ok, no problems. Except now, the brakes are really spongy. When you press the pedal, it takes a while for them to kick in, and even then you have to pump it a bit for them to do any worth while slowing down.

Previous experience with spongy brakes would suggest that they need bleeding, but I'm not to sure about this though. Before I replaced the pads, the brakes weren't spongy at at all and I have no idea how air could have been introduced into the system just by replacing the pads. No brake tubes got split or anything.

So what do you guys think? Air got in the system somehow and they need bleeding or something else?


Fiesta Mk2 Firefly (mish-mash between a Ghia and XR2ish)...it has the Ghia model brakes though.

 

Assuming you have put everything back together correctly and the air no air locks etc i would put it down to them being new.


I usually take it very easy for a while and slowly bring the brakes in to bed them in nicely.

 

I would be inclined to put it down to naff Halfords parts. ALthough the spongeyness would indicate air in the system

 

It would seem you were right. They seem to have worn in quite nicely now, they work a treat
