Default how to get the best from a 1.7 puma

as above wot are the best power gains, dont want to spend mega money on it,want it to look as standard as possible in the engine bay too, also dont want it to use too much more petrol as it allready does!

is bluefin any good for the car in terms of playing with the ecu?is it worth doing or would a remap be more effecticve?

want to know the best places to the parts cheap,as i will be carrying out most of the work myself

also handling, how low should it go,and what wheels best for it,id like to put mondeo zetec s wheels on it the 16' cossie rep wheels on it if poss

any help would be great thanks

Hi mate, I can't give you much advice on the engine as I have left mine untouched... however, mine is lowered 40mil and I have a set of lightweight 15s on. You can definitely tell the difference in handling when driving round town (bumps, potholes etc) but once you go on to A-ways and M-ways I personally think the handling gets a hell of a lot better in terms of like responsiveness and 'sticking to the road'.

My mate lowered his 40mil and had 16s on and never complained and I know of a few people who lowered it 40mil on 17s and only complain when driving round town.

I like the idea of Mondeo Zetec wheels on a Puma or you can go for multispokes - they look the nuts on the car.

Hope it helps...

My best guess is tyres... I had a similar problem a while ago and even though they still looked fine once I got them replaced the twitching just disappeared.

Dont touch the engine, it costs a lot to do it properly. Get some lightweight wheels, good quality tyres, new shock, new springs and new bushes all round.

mines lowered 40mm on weitec, 17" multispoke coated with toyo t1-s and polybushes all round. handles like a dream. Was at the nurburgring last week and he flew round the corners embarrassing much much more expensive cars

Over 120mph wasn't a problem, stays planted unlike std. suspension which is like a moon buggy.

leave the engine alone, but get a milltek exhaust - not only does it give you better overtaking speed on motorways, but it sounds the way it should have done from new. Not chavvy loud, just deeper than std. I love it.

UPDATE:

Now had the ECU re-mapped to FRP settings and 98RON petrol...

Christ - what a difference! Now pulls better right through to the new 7250 rev limiter - there is noticably more torque low down as well.

Mapping it to 98RON has certainly helped the top end grunt and the weird thing is I think I'm getting better MPG too as well!

List prices are Ł200 at Pumaspeed in Wakefield, or Ł100 at Tremona on the south coast.
I went to Pumaspeed, but I didn't pay that much

Do you think its thirsty?? I've borrowed my wife's a few times for work when mine has been in for a service etc and taken it on decent runs and it does just fine on juice.

I drive a Focus 2.0TDCi that does 120 miles to a tenner so believe me, if it was thirsty i'd definitely notice it
