Anyone ever been driving down the road at 60 when you here a massive bang and the sunroof is missing out your car????
Was driving to work thi smorning at 6 when i heard this massive bang looked up and the sunroof was missing!!!! it tore the glass clean out the roof and obviously smashed behind me!!!
Hoiw hard are these to fit as i will have to change the whole mechanism and has anyone close to oxford got one????

never heard of them popping out like that unless it was in a crash and the roof kinked

easy enough to replace , the hardest part is getting it to sit level on the adjusters , and if its a tilt and slide type , all mk4's will fit

 

As said easy to do, change the whole lot mechanism as well just in case!!

Yeah was on the escort its smashed all the mechanism aswell. I really cant belive it, just starting to enjoy it had it set-up yesterday then this!!!

had you got the windows open and was hopping on a bit at the time ?

cant think to why it would pop out unless the mechanism was already brittle and the pressure from having the windows open caused it lift , unless you car is bent but I'm sure you don't want to hear that !

 

Drivers window was open about 1 inch i hope its not bent!!!!
All the plastic of the mechanism is smashed and one of the sliders is bent outwards??? i have no idea y but another job to ruin my nice day of rest

 

Was at Brunters when the same thing happened in a Sapphire the car was doing 167mph on Datron & it ripped the mechanism out as well, nearly scared the driver to death. The sunroof disappeared into the grass & it was not found.

 

Wasnt quite doing that speed about 70ish. still im gobsmacked!!!!

 

This happened on Sticky Paul's cossie a couple of years ago when we were coming up the M23 towards the M25 at speeds in excess of the limit

But his shattered and all the little bits of glass were sucked out and peppered my car and left lots of little chips in the paint and windscreen

 

So wats the chance of anyone near oxford having one complete that i can come collect today im desperate as i use the car everyday for work???

 

there is a few mk4's in every scrappers , you should be able to pick one up easy enough

i got one for £10 in derby and there must have been 10 or more to choose from

 

Sure there's someone nearby with a spare? Check in the parts for sale to see who's breaking one

I had the whole hardtop roof fall off a Reliant Scimitar [ss1, ugly little things] on a local bypass a few years ago, that was very fucking embarassing. And I was only doing about 60.

MAN! [kind of ] THAT is weird! The middle of the glass popping out and not the whole thing! The glass must have been compromised surely?

 

i would have thought that shattering would be more common than popping the whole lot out as when you are pushing on a bit there is quite a pressure difference and the passing air will also cause vibration along the roof , if the vibration hit the same frequency as the glass's natural frequency there is high chance of it shattering

I don't think that tripple figure speeds approaching double the limit and an unsilenced exhaust helped the matter - we think that vibration and the upforce of the passing airflow caused the roof to shatter

 

happened to my brother in his xr2 we was having abit of fun down a dual carriage way doing between 80 and 90 and it popped out right bang i was in the car behind and i heard it

 

mine did mate but i was doing a lot more than 60 maybe add another 90 on top lol i fooking shat my self but i think escyscott was worse as he was behind me
