Default Changing cambelt Astravan!

Ive got a T reg Astravan fitted with a 1.7 SOHC (Low blow engine). Anyway its due a cambelt change and in the Haynes it says u need to ise a DTI gauge and another special vauxhall tool todo it,is this necessary? Is there anyother way todo it with out any specialist tools?

Thanks in advance!

you can do belt without the tools, time engine up no1 cyl as it says in book
i have dot punched top of cam pulley and cut groove in plastic timing cover, then you will have 3 timing marks ie cam crank and pump.
the camshaft pulley isnt dowelled or has any marks,
this is done at your own risk obviously but with tools its still quite easy to do.

I sort of see what your saying,as long as everything stays in the same position it should be in time? Is that it? Just mark everything up so i know its position?
