brakes and tyres are two obvious things to check on most cars, but my mates type r does seem to get through them quicker than most cars. and apparently service history is a must.

cheers Fiddy..
new tyres
new brakes
and full Honda Service History...
I think its a little over priced tho but the extra is worth the Honda warrenty I guess..
I need to ask the question whether the warenty is both parts and labour, or just parts..? heard you can get stung abit on this,,

shit, just typed half a page out and crashed, oh well, here it is...
Look out for
Tyre wear, the rear camber can not be adjusted and they eat the rears, you can buy an aftermarket kit which will allow you to adjust them.
They can drink oil so weekly checks are a must.
check 2nd gear and reverse, can be iffy on some and will need an overhaul
Make sure it has a full service history by honda
alloys can suffer from pitting and can also be easily kurbed
look out for imports being passed off as uk cars
steering racks can fail - think they are noisy if going
suspension can be very sqeeky
stone chipping on the front end
dents on the sides, big flat doors with no protection so car park dents are likely
make sure the vtec kicks in well, 20mph in 2nd then put you foot FLAT to the floor and just over 6k you should feel the kick and hear the engine note change.
Do not rag from from cold, let it warm up - they have a very high tick over from cold and will last a minute before dropping down.
They are almost silent when warmed up tciking over. Mine is so quiet i have tried to start it whilst it is running more than once
These cars do have a high turn over of owners, I would not be put be put off if there is a good service record.
This is likely due to the fact that you have to drive them hard to get the most out of them, i sometimes find that although I love the civic, the additional insurance and fuel consumption is not justified by the performance. It isn't often you can really open these up in day to day use so the performance is no different to a 2.0l car.
But the ride is comfortable, the seats are ace, and the gear position once used to it is cracking and it's feels boring going back to a normal car. Get that lump up in the top end of the revs and get it threw the gears and it can be a quality motor.
Buy one at a good price as you may want to ,move on in a year and the new model is pushing prices down.
Get on to the civic type r owners site, it's a must

AS said they drink fuel! Mine might be up for sale soon as might be getting a job which is 60mile round trip a day so wont be able to justify it.
But most everything is covered above. How old is it?

and then don't leave your keys in the kitchen cos my mate had her kitchen window put through for the keys to theirs.... they had had it 17 days and it was brand new! Never seen it since!

thanks
Rhys - its a 2002 one, with aBOUT 55K ON THE CLOCK i THINK..
2 previous owners and full history..
Got a few questions I need to ask the bloke tomorrow, but from what I have read, they seem a decent car..
Fuel - hopefully wont be too much of an issue as I commute to work by train, therefore do about 300 miles a month roughly...
only downful is leaving it in a carpark all day, but there are other type r;s there, also, I may ened up leaving it at a safer car park if need be

is a 2002 model a pre face lift? im lost
they have the new shape out with the wierd exhausts.. not keen, then i assume the previous model would have been as per the pic above, so a 2002 will the previous model?
thanks

The one i've been out in is a 54 plate.
Facelift was slightly more powerful IIRC, original one was 197bhp, newer one was 202bhp
Front lights are the only thing that stands out for me with regards to other differences, but tbh i havent looked that closely
They don't have fog lights and AC as standard. For 17k i'd be fucking pissed off at that. Even though i don't use my front fogs out of principle, but cars look bare without them

two different older versions mate, facelift ones have different addtions, ie front/rear lights, indicators in wing mirrors, new additional colour, cosmic grey, red/black front seats, lighter flywheel, better wheel geometry
Westy lot of wrong info floating about here pmsl.....
2 owner is good on car like that mate, of that age. AS said 2002 is pre face lift. Just check it out as generally bullet proof. Only reason i ask on age to see if still had warrenty etc.
As said if you only do 300 miles a month i wouldnt worry about fuel etc. They are good complete cars, not overly quick but then you dont expect that, just a fun car.
Just make sure its straight and not been in bump, but im sure you would anyway

Flip2k3
There a fair bit more money though. People always make me laugh ask for info on one and peeps say get another
Plus they are more expensive to insure as Jap import
Are nice though, nearly got one myself but couldnt be arsed as wanted warrenty and not mess about with silly insurance.

my old boss had one on a 2002, had a £500
ex system from cat back...got stung me thinks...and it sounded fooking terrible..
like a corsa with cherry bomb..
i used to drive that now and again, and didnt find it overwhelming
drove real nice and felt new....but it should as it was only 1 year old at the time
not massively impressed with it
but still nice to drive

to be fair.. Ive been scowering this site plus others for a nice example S1 RST.. as for some reason Ive always wanted one..
then I thought, why would I want to go back to owning an old car again.. I never really had any issues with the RS but I cant be fucked with it all anymore.. to much hassle for me.. just little things that always seem to need doing..
and on the plus side, I doubt I'll be on here as much whichj is a bonus to some
