Our 1929-built red-brick 3-bed detached bungalow has a reasonably sized garden and still has an underground air-raid shelter. It is about the size of a small bathroom and has an overground concrete 'canopy' for the stairs and needs some tidying up if it were to be used for anything. We have considered using it for storage etc (Garden equipment etc).

However, we have also seriously considered filling it in.

Now, I know it is quite novel, but it is in the way truthfully.

The question is, do you think it add's to the value of the property? Or should we just fill it in?

 

Loads of Norfolk properties have them!

I had one in my garden on Earlham Road in Norwich as well.

Love the history of having one, and I suppose it is a "period feature", but as to value............?

 

AS Pon said, always remember my next door neighbour having one in the house i grew up. Was awesome. Not sure if will add value though, but as novetly its cool

 

Richard, most of the Bungalows in our street, if not all of them, had a shelter, but as far as I can tell, most have now been filled in already.

I have considered rendering it out, putting electric down there and actually making it usable, the main issue is the large concrete 'pad' at ground level that you can't really do much with. I could landscape it I guess!!

 

sounds good - i would rather buy the bungalow with one than one without if there were 2 similar properties

 

No added value as far I'd be concerned. In the past it has been a down side for family with kids. Very simular issue with ponds. They are just a magnet for a kid to fall into/down. You may get the odd person like it so doesn't relaly matter what you do. Me personally I'd fill it
