If you dont know, hit start bar, then run and type in "dxdiag" click ok and when the box loads up click the sound tab and it will tell you

Try putting it in another free pci slot, there could be a conflict with another device

it could be a few things,

the wrong drivers is the first thing i'd rule out.

Did you go to sound blasters website and get the official drivers? with my Creative X-fi xtreme card i get the control panel aswell so ive got loads of tweaking options, without this the sound is rubbish(well to me it is as im used to it sounding great)
This is what im talking about

With my basic drivers id get sound, even 5.1 but it doesnt sound as good as when ive got the control panel to flick all the goodies on

you can get one like mine, full name is "creative sound blaster X-fi Xtreme audio" its like the entry level "X-fi" card, and it cost me about £50 at the time from pc-world(dont ask, i was in a hurry and couldnt wait for an online order) but now you can get one for as little as £31 from Ebuyer http://www.ebuyer.com/UK/product/121761

Thats just OEM though which means you dont get a fancy box like they come in from shops, you'll just get the card/ cd with software and drivers, which is all you need anyway

Its a great card and would push any speaker system to its limit
