Easyest way to quieten down a loud Cossie? pls help.
I have just brought butches old rwd sapphire. Its running t34, greys etc with a scorpian exhaust with the centre box removed. Now i dont find it to loud at all but i have a 2 year old and starting it up in the mornings is waking him up early each day. Wondered what the easyest way to quieten it down would be without affecting the performance? What is the reason for removing the centre box also? thanks in advance. jamie.
i used to reverse on to our drive, until i got my S1. wifey was worried it would be louder, so i used to drive that on forwards, and she never noticed the difference!
if you reverse on, might be worth trying. if not, i'll shut up

joking aside, i expect its to release the gases quicker.
Wind the boost up and drive it hard for a few minutes, that will quieten it down - permanently
Less drastic, push it down the road then start it
Dunno about magnex, but mongoose (4" pipe, 3" tail) is louder at idle on my 4x4 than the scorpion (3" tail) on the 2wd.
It's more of a burble on the mongoose than the scorpio.
Give it a few revs and the scorpion is easily louder than the mongoose though.
As above, re-fit a centre box first, see how it goes, if still too loud, you'll have to try another exhaust.
Mind you, the original ford one was pretty quiet, but expect a slight loss in mid-range torque (I felt the increase over standard when I upgraded to mongoose on my stage 1 4x4).
The only problem is that it's not cheap and made of mild steel

With the exhaust being a scorpian will i have to buy a donor scorpian exhaust to use the centre box or will a ford centre box fit? also is there one or two centre boxes? I guess another option would be to buy a whole new system say like a magnex if this would quieten it down alot? would putting the centre box back in make alot of difference then?

My 4x4 Cosworth had a silly loud exhaust
Best thing I ever did was dump the boy racer drainpipe and fit a Magnex full system, nice sound, not too loud and none of the horrible drone at motorway speeds

removing centre box makes it LOADS louder on a cossie as the rear box does next to nowt on one.
did it to mine, sounded mint, lol.
also the baffles etc get burnt away on cossies over time, so yeah, 2 new boxes is a good plan

i had a scorpion on my cossie, but had the middle box taken out as i put a hole in it after a month from the dam speed humps
But taken it out makes it 10 times louder, so get a middle box put back in.

i took the box out as scorpions exhaust have only got a 2 1/2 inch through the box so it restricts it, and i didnt use it everyday, if you get a stainless box make sure it has got a 3 inch diameter going through it
i have just put a new box in mine as i couldnt get the bost on my t38 to go above 25psi and now with the new box in it has sorted my problem out and feels much nicer to drive now...
Ha ha ha....Butch just loves his exhausts offensiveley loud, he does it to all the ones he has.
New box is the only way forward OR buy a second hand one with the centre box and sell your one without.
There are ven people who will swap you who like loud systems.

the car originaly had a scorpian system with a real small rear box and a big middle box which was blowing due to hitting my driveway so i chopped it out and put a pipe in its place.. with my old turbo t34 it would still peak at 32psi then drop off and i changed this to a turbo technics t38 and i could not get the boost to go over 24psi. i was told to try a std exhaust cam instead of the bd10 but also could be lack of back pressure in the exhaust. it was easier to get hold of another exhaust but was for a 4x4 so u used the rear box as is a lot larger than my original and mated the new center section with box in onto my down pipe.. first drive up the road and the gauge flew straight to over 30psi wher as before would not get anywhere near that.

Correct me other experts if im wrong, but that dont sound good to me mate.
Boost doesnt mean power, boost is a measure of restriction.
Sounds to me like the exhaust was flowing well enough that it was producing the maximum airflow it could, then you added a restriction, making the boost fly up to produce the same power
Hmm
i basically did one of the things that was recomended to me to try and it has changed something.. it feels nicer to drive and definatley feels quicker . the boost gauge in 3rd gear used to go to 24 then as the revs increased the boost slowly went up a tiny bit wher as all i did was the exhaust and now straight to 30 and stays their. it will be going to the garage some time to be checked but i didnt want to take it before only to be told to change the exhaust or exhaust cam..
