Default FAO All my customers who are running a wasted spark driver..

As some of you will know, we have had a few problems with the drivers tacho circuit not driving some counters correctly, yet others are perfectly fine.

I would like to build up a picture of what works properly and what does not, so if you could possibly reply here and let me know how the tach performs on your car and what car/tach you have.

So, all i need to see in thsi topic is as follows:

Driver bought: DATE:

Car is: Saff2wd / Saff 4wd/ Escos

Tach is: Std/stack/elliot/ etc etc

Performance: Works fine/slow/1/2 speed...

Engine improvements on ignition side:
Any problems? Missfires? Its better, smoother? Worse?

You will be pleased to know we seem to have found the solution, but want to run all possible scenarions through it before we start to retro fit the solution to all our customers products.

Many Many thanks for your help in this research, and thanks for bearing with us. As promised, we havent forgotten you.

My 3 door you have at the moment worked half speed with standard tach, Every thing else worked perfect

My saff 4x4 k6 ssy you did about 12 months ago would sometimes work after a while than sometime not really work at all that was with standard tach. Once again all else was spot on seemed much smoother to drive and never had a problem with it

stu i think it only works on 2wd and 3dr, it deffo doesnt work on an escort.

as i've also tried it on an escort and had no joy.

havent personally tried it on a 2wd or 3rd.

Was my own 4x4 saff i tried it on as its seemed the simplest and most obvious solution.

Ok, thanks to Simon Johnson for his technical support and Mick Clayton for the loan of his car all day and night, we now have what we hope to be a 100% solution for those people whos rev counters are slow / spurious or just plain dont work in:

Escort Cosworths

Sapphires from 89>

Anycar running an aftermarket tacho.

Unfortunately we cant test a 3door or early 2wd sapphire with this yet so will send out the retrofit solution for now and await their feedback.

Its a very easy DIY mod too. So anyone with problems, contact me on sales@remapping.co.uk and i can fire out the instructions and components tomorrow for Friday delivery.

Driver bought: DATE: April '07

Car is: Escos
Tach is: Standard

Performance: Works fine/slow/1/2 speed... works ok until 2k rpm, which then halve itself
Engine improvements on ignition side:
Any problems? Missfires? Its better, smoother? very slight unstable idle, but that could be due to a leak of vacuum, but haven't really drive it past 2k rpm, dunno what the true rpm is so don't wanna risk it. It does pull cleanly upto 2k tho

Yes, wasted spark is often known as a coilpack conversion.

boXXer,

Yes, BUT, You can run bigger gaps without missfires too which also
improves idle quality and emissions.

Just installed the wasted spark board in the ECU tonight, not sure whether it will work OK with a MK2 Escort RS2000 revcounter though....!

Not tried it yet - any other Cossie MK2 Escort owners with coilpack conversion here?

Ive not seen a MK2 escort rev counter actually work properly when its still running a MK2 escort engine... so your chances are slim at best...

e-mail me on sales@remapping.co.uk and i can send you the upgrade instructions though. May improve your chances from slim to thin.

Smoother idle at 850rpm hot with no small "misses" at idle. No misfires in the midrange when the high torque boost spike hits at 27psi - previously with the old dizzy it would miss some days and not others - coilpack cured this. More fuel economy aswell (only a couple of mpg), engine sounded generally healthier aswell (placebo effect maybe?) and the car drove better aswell.

I forgot to add on mine Stu, that I had both the revision 1 and 2 drivers on trial in my ECU and both had no tacho problems, except if the core voltage at the ecu dropped below 11 volts (alternator failure) then the tacho stopped working

I'm running 2 of the conversions

standard mk2 escort revcounter reads zero (probably wiring problem though)
standard cortina mk5 revcounter reads half

engine performance good, no misfires
