Default Checking for business names??

Hi peeps.
Getting slowly closer to having my own garage.
Am finding it very difficult to come up with a good name and I think its very important.

Have a few ideas, but need to check if they are already being used.
Are there any web sites where you can check?

Thankyou.

That's what you need to check if the name is already used.

It depends...

if its a limited company they would be seriously unimpressed if its the same type of business - ie they are easy to confuse.

Not really sure what to do then.

There must be some small business' with similar names?

i.e small restaurants or backstreet clothes shops etc

Assuming you do want to be a Limited Liability Company (seek professional advice before deciding - things like audited accounts etc come at a cost) you could always start a Limited Company as almost anything, and adopt what you want as a trading style - e.g. Off The Shelf Ltd, Trading As Joe Bloggs.

The owner of the correctly registered firm may not be happy and, if you are in the same line of business you will lose in any legal claim.

If you don't want to be a Limited Company, you can trade as almost anything, so long as you don't intend to cause confusion or mislead - so you wouldn't be allowed to call yourself Ford Parts Department, for instance.

Right, so if we are not going to become a limited company, the rules aren't quite as strict, so's to say we could have a similar name to another garage, but if the other garage was about 300 miles away for example, could be ok.

Will definatly check with solicitors too I guess, before fully commiting!

Thanks for reply.
