Pro's

Fuck off tax fiddle
Work you own hours (in a fashion)
No arse of a boss
Your hard work is rewarded

Cons
Not guaranteed a wage.
Sorting your own tax out (pay a little extra for a GOOD accountant)
No Sick pay
No holiday pay

Good luck if you go along with it.

My mate is a joiner, self employed. I work in the chemical industry (spark), both have similar earnings in reality, but I pay Ł6k+ a year in tax, he pays around Ł1k if he's unlucky.

Do the maths...

You need to make sure you have ALL the right certification and trade memberships for the different categories of alarms.

We hired a guy to do some work for us who had set up on his own after 20 years experience with ADT, but the council wouldn't allow him to certify the installation of a smoke detector because he hadn't joined up to SELECT (Ł3k a year or something ridiculous, to "prove" that he was competent!!)

Hello. One of my good mates has his own business, based down preston.
It's called "CSC", "Charles Stock Consultancy"

He specialises in sound and vision and lutron lighting, home entertainment etc. Not quite what you do, but I imagine if a customer goes for one, he is probably inclined to go for the other (hand in hand so to speak).

He does very well and has cusomers all over the place.
Check out his web site and drop him an e-mail see if he can find you anything. www.charlesstockconsultancy.co.uk .

He's into his cars too. He drives a 650bhp R32 GTR.

Good:
Not having to be in the same place every day doing the same old shit.
Being able to avoid rush hour ques (I'm allergic to them!)
Not having to shave if you don't want too
I don't think I even own a tie!
Not having to drive a BMW 320d company car

Bad:
Feeling like you work 24/7 and feeling guilty about taking a day off!
Doing your own tax return
Chasing up forgetful people for money, or even worse the cunts who blatantly don't intend to pay but say they will!
Totally random bank balance
It's 1AM and I've still got loads of work to do tonight!
