I'm building a wall approximately 3ft which supports a bank equal in height and about 2ft in depth, how low below ground level should I go with the foundation and wall for it to be safe.

thanks

the wall is supporting stuff yes?
then you need to find out how wide it's going to be at the top
so if it's going to be 2 bricks wide at the top, you need to taper it so that it's probably going to be 4 bricks wide at thebottom, the old 1.2 x thingy like the french bloke who worked out this stuff figured out

if it was a 3 foot wall and it was 1 wide wide at the top, the base at the first metre would be 1.2 foot wide, then the next metre down would be 1.4 foot wide and the base of the base would be 1.6 foot wide

then you have to figure the wieght of the wall to determine how much footings you'd need to support the wieght of it

i'm sure someone will tell you exactly what oyu need to know

If its a retaining wall for god sake put drainage seeper holes in and dont just make it a solid wall , u will be surprised how many folk do this and then moan like fook a few month later why the wall has cracked all over the shot ,lol

i used to be a landscape gardener and did all soft/hard landscaping and i was told to go to a very swish half million quid house to repair a wall ,just basically drilling drainage holes and repair the cracks to tidy it up ,drilled the holes and fook me i dunno how the wall never colapsed tbh im not kidding when i say my leg got soaked ,lol, every hole i drilled and there was water gushing out bigtime and there was that much i had to pull back the gravel/chuckies to pierce the plastic sheeting underneath to let water away as the gravel was swimming ,lol

Did all this to find out who actually built the wall .........................

My fookin boss

i got on phone when i found that out to rip the piss outa him only to find out at same time they were gonna be screwing him in court , ohhhhh how i laughed

I bet he was well miffed!! lmao

I'd not considered drainage holes, having read that they're pretty bloody essential!

I'll get some pictures up when work has started and keep you updated

cheers for the help lads

A metre's worth of foundation should be alright IMO. As said make sure to put some holes in for drainage.
