Default anyone know about ford 1.8d engines

the one thats in my n reg van. it used to start mint.On a morning i would give it a couple of heats and it would fire mint,it still does now. but before, when it had been fired up,if you finished your journey, then came back 2/3 hours later it would fire sraight up.
Now you have to give it 2 heats then it turns for quite a few seconds then fires (a bit of smoke, never used to). but if i give it 1 heat, then wait for the click, it fires within a second of turning the key.
I have changed glow plugs,Diesel filter,And put in some diesel and injector cleaner.... Any ideas?
Its not a major problem but its buggin me why its not like it used to be
Thanks greg
