ST170 gearbox in a Mk4 Escort.....
The gearing is all wrong for a turbo engine, you wont get the best performance from the engine to the road using that gearbox. The ST170 box is designed to help a N/A engine in the areas it loses out to a turbo engine

yeah bit I luve the idea of a six speed shifter, and atm I can't see any other way of doing it.
Besides, once the engin is all set and build I think I might get bernie to make some custom ratios to make full use of it. 5 accelerating gears, on long top speed gear.
Thing is the car is to be sprayed in Feb/March, so it will need fitting at the same time so I dont ruin the new paint job.

The St170 box has 2 layshafts so it keeps the gears 1st, 2nd and 3rd normal spacing and then uses 4th, 5th and 6th as close ratio gears, not idea for a turbo powered car, i think a turbo works better when its got something to work against and a N/A just need to rev as fast and as high as possible hence the ST170 gearbox layout
