Think I need a new one as they're making a bit of a racket and my PC keeps shutting itself down. I think it's getting a bit too warm.

How much is a fan (or are they a pair ?) Easy for an idiot to fit himself ?

 

Fans are a couple of quid, very very easy to fit, just bear in mind they are designed to blow one way, they normally have a little arrow on em.

Are you sure it's not your power supply on the way out?

 

No idea mate, but it only seems to do it when the house is quite warm. Heatings off tonight and no problem (so far anyways) at all, so thought I'd try the fans first ? Can you buy uprated / bigger ones ?

 

Take a look at the processor heat sink and check it isnt clogged up. It doesn't take much dust for it to overheat the CPU.

Exactly as above. My friend at works PC was constantly turning itself off when it got "warm" but turned out to be the finned heatsink on the CPU was stuffed full off dust, and a quick blow out sorted it right out - worked fine after that

 

OK, sounds like this could be first point of call.............I can take the side off and blow the dust away from everything - whats this CPU heat sink look like, and as above - where is it ?

 

Open up the PC and look for something like this;



Make sure it doesn't have lots of dust in it

Best thing to do is give the inside a good blow out - don't hoover it tho FFS! Lots of little bits that can "dissapear" with the suction from a hoover A good blow out will work - either get them lungs working or get a small can of compressed air and blast the case (not too close mind)

 

Also check the fan on the back of your power supply (where your kettle lead plugs in) in actually spinning!

It might well have a fan on it (in fact I'll gaurantee it'll have a fan on it) so it'll probably look more like this;

 

No probs And you probably can buy it in PC World, but to be honest, I just take mine outside (so as not to get dust everywhere) and open the case and get the lungs working! A Good few puffs and you should see dust in the air If you have a hoover with "blow" function, then this will work aswell - just don't touch anything with the end of the hoover

 

Oh I'll do that then. I can go down my shed and do it down there on the workbench.

I swear if Id have had some knitting needles I could have made a jumper out of the crap that came off the heatsink/fan

 

Yeah a fair bit of shite came out I have to say................where it came from though I don't know !! Did as Thrush said round the heat sink thingy and fan though. Used a paintbrush to clean the fans themselves.

 

yeah you can pick them up from ebuyer for as little as 99p or pc world for a few quid
