Default running out of fuel

been to my car today to give it a quick run, started to splutter, so i swirched off and returned with 5 litres of fuel, no joy, another 5 litres of fuel and still she wont start.
Cranking occaisionally fires and no smell of petrol, but wont start.
I'm sure i've done this before and made a mental note (which i've forgotten) not to let it happen again. I think last time i had to put maybe 20 litres in it to get it going again.
Am i on the right track or shall i just drag her round the block on the back of my truck?

Listen for fuel pump priming, if it is not you may have dodgy CRANK SENSOR CONNECTOR, give it a wiggle to see if it helps.
if getting no CPS signal then it will not prime as mine did not and had same problem, changed connector perfect ever since.
