Default Sierra Cosworth advice

Hi there. I'm a newbie to the forum, we've had a Sierra Cosworth Saloon in the family for a while which i get to drive most days !! (hubby has a company car and is dead jealous !). We bought it with a louder dump valve, a stage one chip and an uprated acuator (okay i know what a chip is but an actuator ? Never mind !).

The guy we got it from said we just needed a better/bigger exhaust and a cone air filter to get 270 hp as it is around 250 hp now. Does this sound about right ? Also, we have a problem when people are in the back seat of car, the exhaust is scrapping the ground when you accelerate hard and speedbumps are a nightmare. Apparently all Cosworths do this ?

i dont know if your cossy has been lowered or not but under boost they all squat!!!!...i had a saff that was a nightmare..sparks everywhere when i floored it.. if it has been lowered and you frequently carry passengers you should put it back to standard height...if not uprate the springs..ride will be a little harsher though....as for the exhaust etc..fitting a cone filter and exhaust will gain 20bhp..but you could get 270 on standard anyway..depends on what boost your running

my sapph bottomed out that much i wore through the diff casing!!!!!!!!!!!!

My sapphire is lowerd by 25mm and was scraping off everything when I first got it, turned out to be a broken exhaust mounting, welded it back on and replaced all the rubber exhaust mounts all in it cost me about 30 euro to do, no problems now even with passengers.

Hi Susanne

Your information is about right, a nice stainless exhaust will make the sierra sound a lot nicer and would give you a little bit more power

You can buy one new but they are quite a lot of money. You can pick up a decent magnex/mongoose exhaust off here easily

There are many decent traders on here, you've just got to make up ya mind what exhaust takes your fancy.

Concerning the rubbing has the car got standard suspension? if so a set a shocks might be in order if u fancy it

hello sue welcome 2 passion ford,

By the sounds of ur post yer with the right exhaust u should b lookin at 270bhp, i wouldnt fuss 2 much bout the cone filter, their r people runnin big bhp on here usin the standard air filter, u may just need 2 change the panel filter inside, as smit said u can pick up some wicked deals on here on a second hand exhaust, or even look on e-bay i picked up a brand new full mongoose system 4 bout £300,

I had the same problem with my old back box rubbin when i booted the gass, looked amazin at night sparks all over the place, but wrecked the exhaust, look 2 c if the exhaust is fitted correctly, on the right mounts, if it is then time 2 look at the suspension, if its original it could b tired n need replacin, then again it could have been lowerd stupid amounts, just a couple of things 4 u 2 check

Hi welcome to the forum If your looking to change your exhaust i have a magnex one im selling, it splits into two under the car and has had both box`s removed, my car is very low and it rarely touched the ground while going fast, only if it was a bumpy road

Its maybe worth your while getting the car checked over at a rolling road too just to make sure things are ok and its not running to much boost

let us no how you get on

Hi

Yeah, good advise, get a stainless performance exahust and a good induction kit to release that bit extra to get you up to the full stage one expected 270 hp. We got these - recomed mongoose and K&N 57i, check us out on the internet....?

Try a 4x4 intercooler also, plenty used around for £100 or so - this will allow you to run a little more boost saftley (just done go mad).

The problem with the suspension is that its probably knackered, if the springs are sagging, the dampers will probably be fit for the bin if they are the same age we reckon. We've put Suierra based stock cars together with Gaz kits, dont go coil over for a road car, go for adjustable with standrad ride hieght but 25-30% uprated springs or a drop of 25-40mm max. This will give you better grip and less squat under acceleration (when the rear dips down) which will stop the car scrapping its bum - i know, had the same issue. Depending upon the amount of lowering you do, you will see some negative camber on the wheels - be prepared for some tyre bills ......

Sorry about the waffle, love Cossies.....

Mike
