Optimum size for rear hub shims??

Optimum size for rear hub shims??
I have a set of R+B rear hub shims to fit to my cossie rear end, is there an optimum size? If I lower the rear a lot and have the splash guards removed will a thicker shim be better, say twice the thicknes of Mikes??
