Heavier and more transmission loss. 2 wheel drive cars are faster in a straight line.

has it scared u already?
u will enjoy it once your're used to it & have some decent tyres
if u really want 4wd then save up, sell this one & buy a 4wd not worth the hassel to convert

Nearly lost it the other night and can't seem to get the power down when roads are slightly greasy. Would some bigger wheels help?

You can fit 235/40/17's on the back of a 2wd saph and they do make a hell of a difference. Just get used to the car and if you still want to go 4wd and want to keep the car you will need, the following bits off a 4x4:

Gear box and prop
Front diff, drive shafts, hubs, and sump.
Clutch cable different aswell i think.

I know you can use to 2wd rear diff but not sure if the ratios are the same so probably easier to go for a 4x4 one instead.

I thought the transmission tunnel needs modding too.

And keep it off the grass

Coverted mine from 2WD to 4x4 and although its slower in a straight line and not as much fun its not outweighed by the ability to go out in the rain without fear of death

b9kos did you not need to modify the front chassis legs to clear the front drive shafts?

please don't. I'd rather snake it down the road. 4wd is boring.
Full lock and 2 smokin' tyres!!!

4x4 faster 0-60 (not talking standard cars here of course), faster round bends, faster in the wet.

2wd faster in a straight line WHEN STANDARD.

don't bother- learn to drive, spend the money on some driver training , I have got an escort cossie 4x4 and a saff 2wd, the saff is much more fun , sure the escort is point and shoot fast, but there is much more skill and satisfaction in driving the 2wd fast.

What suspendion is it on? what tyres/wheels you on?

Have a read through this thread, might help a bit with your cars chassis development

I also did the 4x4 conversion to a Merkur XR4ti here in the states and it wasn't that difficult. As mentioned above, some small mods to the trans tunnel and front chasiss legs, everything else is a direct bolt-in... front hubs, crossmember, steering rack, dampers, etc. I rear diff ratio is also different.

I expected this conversion to make my car very heavy but it actually lost a few lbs from when it was and XR4TI and now weighs 2900lbs, that's about 200 less than a 2wd 3dr.

As far as the fun factor I do miss the tail out action and smoking the rears but I really have had enough of that during my Mustang days
