where is the best place to get a 2wd gearbox rebuild?
where is the best place to get a 2wd gearbox rebuild? or buy a good strong box? i live near oxford so the nearer the better really! cheers guys[/code]
you can either have it done at cts (gearboxman off here- although i haven't seen him post for a while), or buy a rebuild kit from them (or many other places as the wc t5 is widely used in usa. rebuild is a relatively straightforward job - done mine myself

How much/long did it take you ? Anything to look out for? Seen the gearbox rebuild kits on ebay myself, and wondered....
think the full rebuild kit (synchro rings etc + bearings) was about Ł200.
was done in a day. one difficult step in the whole process - removing 5th driven gear - as you need a very long puller to pull it off the output shaft and there is only a very narrow gap behind it.
if i was doing it again, i would strip it down to that point, take it to a specialist to have them remove it, then go back home and finish the rest. reassembly is easy, it's just the reverse of removal, and even 5th driven gear is easy to put back on with a piece of tubing the right diameter and a good press or fbh

have talk to the guys in USA (5speed.com I think it was) ... I was told that the trick is to drop the counter gear axle down as far as possible, then it should be possible to cut the "bearing thing"
if I remember tomorrow, I will find the mail I got from them, and post it here...
foreigneRS : what about the end float on both axels....did you check it yourself .. ? as I think about fixing another box myself (only took the first apart
