or you can just cut the top off with a knife
but you wouldn't be able to use it again
mind you, if you tywist and pull it snaps the little locking plate and you need a new one anyway

If you want to reuse the nob, and this is for other reasons, (eg gearbox removal), the other way is to remove the knob and shaft complete.
Remnove the plastic surround panel, lift up the leather gaitor, and underneath you will see two pins. One stops it from going into reverse without pulling up on the thingy, and the other further down holds the stick on.
Ignore the longer one, that can stay there. Use a centre punch and hammer, and remove the pin, and then carefully (but with some effort) twist off the stick. Then you can refit afterwords in reverse.
