trackday beginner? where do i start
ive finnaly got my xr2 finished so want to do a few track days in it but ive never done 1 before
i could not use it to its full potential on a public road for obvious reasons so would be nice to use it to its full potential on track although not with the ALS as i believe you cant get away with this anywhere anymore???
any 1 recomend a good place to start im in essex near southend so closer would be better for me to start with
what sort of costs m i looking at
& is there anything the car specifically needs to be allowed on
noise limits will be ok as i had a large back box put on the car for this reason
& a helmet i can getno problem

Cost this time of year around Ł120
You need a licence, helmet and a car - that seriously is about it.
ALS systems will get you black flagged if they fail local noise regs, black flag collecting will get you thrown off the circuit.
Brands Hatch has plenty, Ł129 in January Open Pit Lane 10am till Dusk

Good luck Marc,
Brands is a good track, and nice pit's, but becarefull, as they are very strict.
i might be intrested in joining you, but i dont want to do any till end of Feb time.

I've done a couple of airfield track days with Javelin (at Wooodbridge Ł109) I'm a bit scared to attempt a proper circuit, but the airfield days have been great to get a taster and bit of experience, took 20mins tutition at the same time (for Ł20) which did the world of good

Make sure your fully fuelled, oiled and watered, with good tyres at the right pressure. From there it is just a matter of enjoying it!
If you can get some instruction or someone thats been before to go with you the first time you'll be more confident. But at the end of the day its safer than being on the road!
Brands is a good place to start if its on the short circuit. If it is the long circuit its still user friendly but out the back end the trees can be off putting for a novice! (like a mini nurburgring, but wider!)
Wherever you go you will enjoy it, nothing coming the other way, no pedestrians, no slow moving vehicles and like minded bezzers!!
Its much better than being on the road! Enjoy

Iv also never done a track day before and taking the plunge this year, My father in law done one a couple of years back in his stage 3 sapph at brands and wants to drag me along this time, he is looking at doing something in may or june time. as i have no longer got my sapph he said that I could use his XR4x4 turbo technics. so i will be stripping it out trying to find some slicks for standard lattice wheels and having a go.
do they have open track days at thruxton as he said that brands was really good but they only use the short indy bit?

Thruxton has one of the lowest acceptable sound levels of most of the major circuits 90dB static
Brands do use all the track on a lot of days tho

All seriousness though, my first "propper" track day was at Oulton Park, which was great fun.
It was a novice day, and I'd recommend another! the cones were really really helpful, telling you where to brake, and where to point the car.

Whats the best thing to with track insurance, get a seperate insurance?
I used to be covered on one of my cars by HIC and in the policy it said that I had track cover if it was a FIA approved day and I had a fixed fire extinguisher??

If you want my PERSONAL view Trist, then its all a load of bollx
All you need if you can get it is "shell insurance" as that will pay out if the shell gets damaged.
In a lot of other cases companys will use all means possible to avoid paying, and because you are at there at your own will and have signed an indemnity form and disclaimer to say so you cant claim off the venue or other 3rd party for most accidents.
Generally its MSA approved days not FiA, and as all UK tracks have to be registered by the MSA most days are already "approved"
This just keeps it to an organised and legal day in as far as off the road racing etc. Fire extinguisher point is also totally and utterly useless. If your car catches fire and it takes hold - you will need a complete fire engine to put it out not a little 1kg fire extinguisher lol.
But if they are the rules they impose then you MUST follow them otherwise even though you have paid, you will find yourself without insurance cover.
My advice is if your worried then dont go on track or use something that your less worried about.
95% of the other people out there wont have insurance.
