Default Quick question about PINGS(on-line games)

Am right in thinking the lower the better when it comes to ping?

For example mine never seems to get higher than 30-40 on Battlefield 2142, most times when i look its between 10-20 somewhere, is that good?

Ive seen other people at 150 or more

No monitor has a 0ms refresh rate, it's impossible......and 8ms (that's milliseconds, as in thousandths of a second) is hardly enough time for anyone to move anywhere very far...

And anyway, why are we talking about monitor refresh-rates when the initial question was about network latency (ie. ping-responses)?

Ping-latency is very rarely related to the speed of a connection, when it comes to broadband. You can have a 15ms ping-response on a very good 512kbps line, and a 150ms ping-response on a very bad (congested) 8Mbps line. It's more about the route the packets take, from your machine to their destination, and the quality of the phone-line involved, congestion at any "bottle-neck" points, and so on. Have a read here for more info...

TFT's are shocking for games end of.

like ive said about pings you can have a 1meg line or an 8 meg doesn't matter its the upload that will make a difference to your ping ! im on 10meg down and 386k upload and i ping around 20 but when i use to have 1 meg down and 1 meg up i use to ping 10

Bandwidth, in general, has a very small effect on latency response times......yes, a 45Mbps leased line will "ping" a lot quicker than a 56kbps dial-up connection, but when it comes to mid-range stuff (ie. broadband), the quality and length of your line before it enters BT's (or whichever provider you're connecting to) network, the level of contention at your exchange, and the peering/transit networks you're going through, will make much more of a difference.

And TFTs aren't as shocking for gaming as they used to be when the refresh-rates on them were 25ms and above......you can get TFTs, these days, that have response times of 2-5ms, which makes them just as good for gaming as a CRT. The difference being that CRTs, generally, will support a lot higher resolutions......my 19" CRT will support 2048x1536 @ 72Hz, whereas a decent 19" CRT will struggle to do 1600x1200.

a small article from a counter-strike site

CPL Italy begins today! With the event in Verona threatening to be cancelled with rumour's of TFTs been used, only 14 teams have turned up. MYM and SK-Gaming amongst others have pulled out based on poor rumours coming from the event. The favourites out of the teams left in are A-Losers and Against All Authority who gained BYEs to the next round.

CPL is one of the biggest gaming tounrys for counter-strike with a prize pot of about Ł15k

thats how much the gaming world think to tft's and they would have still been the " best " tft's available, maybe to some random joe who just jumps on battlefield for a few hours a week he wouldnt notice the difference but to someone like me who is into online gaming at quite a high level in the uk theres no way i would EVER consider a tft

2ms response-time from a TFT for a decent price

With a Ł15k prize-tag, I'd want everything to be perfect aswell, but I'd like you to find me a single human being on the planet who could notice anything wrong with a 2ms refresh-time on a TFT. I wasn't saying that TFTs are yet on a par with CRTs, when it comes to how fast-moving images look on-screen, but they're getting pretty damn close.

Latency\Ping isn't just gouverned by the speed of your connection, the speed of your computer system also plays a very big factor.

Alot of the more Leet players will not have any programs running in the back ground including firewalls and anti-virus applications because all these things affect the speed at which they play.

As for the TFT response times anything under 10ms is good, the human eye and brain can not tell the difference between any of the screens that operate under 10ms so you'll be waisting your money thinking a 2ms response TFT will make any difference.
