Default Best Diesel Saloon for £2000 ?????

We might need to buy a Diesel saloon for 2 grand or less and want to know which car people would recommend. So far i'm thinking Mondeo,Vectra or Pug 406.None of these are particularly inspiring but then they're not going to be are theyLOL .Just want to know which one people would go for and why. Thanks Gaz

Considering my A4 was sposed to be a temp fix until we could get the Focus ST170 estate it's really grown on me and we're now going to replace it with another A4.

Superb cars

Have a mooch around for an lpg jobbie ...you wont get better than one of those ..none of that getting covered in shitty diesel or shaking your windows when you kick it into life ..and not forgetting the Cosworth effect smoke out the exhaust!

Why do you have to buy a diesel?? Why dont you save money, and buy a cheaper petrol, same model?? £0.839 vs £0.899 /litre..

Just had the same decision myself. bought a 2.0l SRI Vectra, S reg for a grand, cheaper than the diesel equivalents, and saved myself money in the process. Great winter car.

my mate has just bought a 2001 y reg passat diesel turbo
sort of forrest green 140k miles, full history for 2 grand
it drives and looks like 50k miles.
only problem is he wants nearly 2.5grand for it, nice thing though.
vectra diesels are good for big miles, early ones are better than late ones.
406 mondeo vectra are very popular as taxis,so don't get stung with one.

Id have gone for a HDI 406, or a Mondeo TDCI, but they are twice the price as my trusty new steed, oh, and strangely enough, they wanted over £150 - £200 more to insure me on LX versions of the above diesels, compared to an SRI 2.0 16v Vectra!!

So, I now have an additional Grand in the bank (think how much fuel that buys...if anyone has worked it out...about 9,400 miles of fuel. circa £0.839 per litre, and 36 mpg. That is an awful lot of fuel to be going at instead of me paying £2k for a diesel. (assuming you paid £1k for the car, which I did)

Oh, ad apart from a new thermo stat, and some new rear pads she has seen me right for over a month and a half, and circa 3250 miles.
