220 GSI-T Conversion. Build up progressing. Update today
So, I thought I would start the thread again. As to be honest the complete direction of the project has changed.
The few hundred pound Coupe was up and running but would never get through an MOT again.
Firstly I was going to use this as a donar car.

I built up a stock of parts that I would either want or just general items which should be replaced.

These buggers have a habbit of snapping so filled with Ginger goo. Just incase I needed to ever do again.

Now the car this was going in is probably in some peoples eyes an old mans car. Originally a Fully taxed and MOT’ed and near immaculate condition this was going to be the receiver of some pure unadulterated GRUNT.

Engine out.

Sitting very High.

Originally the engine from the coupe was going to be in this car so took it out of its previous owner.

BUT. Having a peek on ebay I managed to get hold of a new 220 Turbo engine for a stupid price Direct from an EX rover dealer.
Put it this way book price is £2200 for one of these. I got it for £250.

Other things included were a dash from the newer shape bubble car. Makes it look a lot more modern inside.

Now. As the car was running near enough the loom I need. I am keeping the cabin loom as is. The engine loom is different but this is ok as it goes direct into the ECU.
Only mod for this is a FAN system. Taken from the coupe it operated a 2 stage system. (Stage two sounding like the millennium fulkun taking off and sucking in children from the street.)
A peek of the custom addition. Bits from Vehicle wiring products.

Now back to the important bit, the engine build up. Out of the crate.

Another view.

Getting the studs back in for inny and outty manifold.

All this to come off as the engine mount is for the 800 Vitesse turbo and not the 220 turbo. Seemed a shame but needed to be done.

Lowered and Larger wheels alot better.
Todays work (25 November) was getting the new lump ready so I could just dump it in and connect it all up with out messing about under the bonnet too much.
Thermostat housing cleaned and back on.

Inlet manifold. Injector rail, and throttle body cleaned and back on.

Another view.

General Pic

Time to get this side of the engine ready.

Gearbox adaptor plate cleaned and back on. Trust me being a Rover it took ages to clean.

Had to get engine in the air to get fly wheel back on. Once this was done I could lock the engine down. And not that I don’t trust rover I could check the timing. And also torque of some important items.

Fly wheel on

Clutch on

Another general pick.

That’s it for now!

Cant belive you picked up a new engine for that price. Bargin. Being an 820 engine have you replaced the sump and oil pick up? As you might find it will hit the floor if your car is lowered. Also the exhaust cam will be the 180ps version if it isnt a vitesse sport engine, so swap that over too. I love the GSI shape. Do miss me GSI Turbo
I have been a slob today. Nothing more to update.
Need to get the gearbox cleaned. which as its a Rover and capped in oil will be no easy task.
More will come next weekend.
