im looking for a wireless solution to home networking.

some of the ones ive looked at, require a "server".

is there anything that would allow me to plug my 1.5mb lan cable into (a box or such) that would allow wireless thruout the house

Normally, you need an access point which converts the signals on a wired network to wireless.
What do you do at the moment with the cable that comes from the wall (the lan cable you mention ?).
I guess you should be able to connect this into an access point and then stick a wireless card into your laptop.
