Registering a motorsport shell
If it's a brand new shell and you use all new components to build up the car and you have all the receipts including one from the manufacturer of the shell (not from some guy on ebay) then you can get current reg.
If it's used to rebuild a car with a damaged shell and most of the components are from the original car and you have the receipt from the manufacturer of the shell, then you probably will get to keep the original reg.
Otherwise no.
And what's wrong with a Q reg?
Have I covered all the possibles?

Used to be done on a points basis.
Shell counted for xx points, engine xx points and so on and so on.
Once you reached the magic figure a new date related plate was issued.
It used to be possible to get a new date related plate on a second hand motorsport shell if it had not been registered previously.

you will need a manufactres reciept
i.e ford
as ford no longer sell these shells anymore then it will go on a q plate unless the shell has the original reciept
from dvla website
In order to retain the original registration mark:
cars and car-derived vans must use:
The original unmodified chassis or unaltered bodyshell (i.e. body and chassis as one unit - monocoque); or a new chassis or monocoque bodyshell of the same specification as the original supported by evidence from the dealer or manufacturer (e.g. receipt).
And two other major components from the original vehicle ie suspension (front & back); steering assembly; axles (both); transmission or engine.
If a second-hand chassis or monocoque bodyshell is used, the vehicle must pass a an enhanced single vehicle approval (ESVA) or single vehicle approval (SVA) test after which a "Q" prefix registration number will be allocated.

I used to get cars registerd in liverpool(when they used to do it)
as Chester vro were a fpita.
it also depended on how good you were at bamboozling officials.
but the recipts with dates usually swung a reg without going on a Q
It could depend on how insistant you were.

I looked into this once too, and as said before if you don't have a receipt from Ford which matches the DELIVERY TAG on the slam panel, it gets hardwork. Imagine some tossers blasting and primering a 3 door 1.6 shell and passing it off as a new cossie?
