Obviously that excludes

Subaru - Banbury
Ford - Oop North somewhere Cockermouth?
Mitsubishi - Rugby way

Its for a couple reasons
1) Most rallies are held in LHD countries
2) A lot of the drivers come from LHD countries

If you were to become a works driver, chances are you "could" have RHD, but most of the parts will be made with LHD in mind. So you'll run into other problems

Theres only Skoda, Peugeot and Citroen left after that. So "half" might have been better

AND

Bear in mind that Japan is RHD too, so why do they do it?

.......and we all know rally drivers use only one side of the road

I'm fairly sure it's for reasons of most rally drivers being from the continent, and so historically LHD cars were used, therefore motorsport parts were mostly designed around LHD - in that some parts will only fit LHD vehicles....(or at least that was the case with some parts, can't remember which ones now though... certain transmission components I think )

Have heard that Escort Cossie rally cars are left hookers due to the size of the front diffs. They tend to use very large diffs this means that the steering columb does not fit past it! therefore the sterring needs to be on the other side!! Left side! If you think about it there are no other cars on the road so why would it matter what side of the car you drove with in europe or britain.

True but a lot of the rally cars clock up road miles between stages and what have you. As most rally's are held in countries that are left hand drive it makes sense to do it that way. And as said above I think a lot of parts are made only for left hand drive cars.

Its because most all the rallies are in countries where LHD is the norm. There is a massive number of non stage road miles in a rally compared to full on stage miles.

True about the road miles, could be to do with where the cars are built, the manufacturers home country where the development work happens?

Surely thats Ok in a LHD car

Actually only hard things to overtake in LHD (In my experience) are buses, vans and lorries. Everything else you can lok directly through.

I can only think of a few places that use RHD cars:

UK
OZ
Japan

I'm sure that I'm missing some smaller ones, but I doubt seriously that the major car companies consider them 'core sources of revenue', so they are easily overlooked.

I'd be happy if all the measurement was in metric and all the cars were LHD

As always....YMMV

EscortWRC, Cyprus, New Zealand as well.

Think it's as stated above - most drivers are from LHD countries, plus most of the cars are originally designed as LHD, so engine bays are originally designed with column on the left, and have to be frigged over for RHD.

The cynic in me says it's coz even the factories don't want to pay rip off UK prices for RHD shells

The reason that RHD shells are more expensive is that they are a small proportion of the total produced.

Simple supply and demand

To me, a shell that is RHD is not worth looking at, as I'm sure LHD shells are for most of you guys.

I remember watching something on the trucks for the F1 teams were built LHD but UK registered as they spend most of the season abroad so dont know if it is anything to do with that? Although most Rally cars dont tend to stick to one side of the road!

This is obviously because the fastest drivers come from Finland and they prefer LHD.
Just look at the past world rally champions:

Finland 13
Rest of the world 11

Other countries that have done well:
Sweden, Spain, France, Italy, Germany,... all LHD

2 championships in total for RHD drivers

Spot on about the diffs.

Steve Scott used to have a rhd rally car but had to convert it to left hand to get the bigger diffs in for the reason stated cant imagine him converting a car that DID make it harder to get his McD's take away pmsl
