When you tighten the nut it should compress the olive onto the pipe forming the seal AFAIK. Should be REALLY tight like that.

Oh, by the way, don't crank it right up tight as you will crush the pipe and olive!

do the nut up mate! It pushes it into the joint and it squeezes the olive onto the pipe. could use a bit of jointing paste if you want to make sure it seals but its not necessary.
hope it helps!

i hate it when plumbers use jointing tape ... no need for it unless they are too heavy handed

last one that did it on one of my jobs caused the client to be charged around £600 labour for me to flush it out of their coffee machine bet i charge more an hour than tiff does

If theyre bad enough to be able to get it inside the pipe when putting it on then they shouldnt be in the job really should they? I said jointing paste anyway! you dont use tape on compression joints.

i put ptfe tape on all the joints
and the stuff the pipe in as far as it will go before tightening up the nut
you can normally get it tight enough with your hand and then as you tighten it up with the spanners they start to bite
you can also "feel" when the olive has got tight enough once you've done a few

compression fittings nowadays are pi55 poor

i always use a water jointing paste(jet blue)around the olives and have had no problems

if you put it on the inside of the pipe thats another story
