Default One for the header tank spotters

Can some one explain the differences between 2wd and 4wd Saph header tanks, as they look the same to me.

And did early 2wd Saphs come with the three-door-style tank c/w the water level take-off?

Cheers,

Si

That was my understanding 2wd and 4wd tanks, due to the slightly different water system and hosing arangements.

3dr's and 2wd saph's have the same tanks with the level sensor boss on the saph's blanked off and the water return at the top of the tank. The 4wd and escort ones dont have the water return at the top of the tank, they have it in the place of where the level sensor boss used to be which is below the water level and is larger then the small 2wd one. Yoy cant get the 2wd ones any more but you can get the 4wd ones. I have modified a 4wd one to use with the 2wd application by putting a fitting at the top of the tank and blocking off the 4wd port. I will try to fit the level sensor in the 4wd port at some point.

As above, I believe Ford used to sell an adapter pipe in order to fit the 4wd tank to the 2wd tank, I had this arrangement on mine when I first got it and I wasn't keen on it as the return was below the water line and after a hard run you could hear the water bubling when the engine was switched off. That problem dissapeared when I fitted the tank from a 3dr as the return pipe is up high.

We've just published issue number 247 - do you really think I can be bothered to plough through all of those?

Cheers for all the replies. Makes sense now.

first thing i did when i got my bailey tank was to get one with a level sender fitting in the side
unpluged the low washer fluid gizmo and plugged it into the side of teh header tank instead

gave me at least 2 warnings when i'd dumped all my water so was worth the cost of extending the wire just a little bit
