This word keeps cropping up for me and I don't know what it is....

It's basically a car that doesn't look anything special on the outside but has the power and performance to embarass alot more expensive and newer cars etc

Just to answer the topic title question, the reason why we refer to some high performance cars as "sleepers" may be because the term "sleeper" was used in the cold war era (60's/70's and early 80's) to describe a spy or agent who would blend in amongst the population and not be noticed. He or she would live a normal life with an assumed name or identity.

Sned-boy: yours would be a sleeper if the outside looked Ford factory style. As it is modified, then NO, it is not a sleeper. Yours is more of a "surpriser". (Just made that name up btw... )
Cool conversion tho.

The van is a sleeper..but the wheels give it away a little...

That mk 3 is a propper sleeper i've got a sierra estate with roof bars and even a tow bar. running hopefull 300bhp YB we'll fine out tomorrow at rooling road.

the mk3 has all the sleeper propertys as in steel wheels , tho bigger than standard dont give the game away, and the 70/80s AA badge is the iceing and the sleepers cake
