Default mk 6 escort ideling trouble

whats controls the idel on a mk6 97 1800 ghiax? the car struggles to idel sometimes and dies

if you cometo a junction and pout in neutral it drops right down and gets a bit wobbly or cuts out, anyone help?

Try things in this order [cheapest parts to most expensive]:

1. Check and clean Air Filter and any breathers [unlikely to cause the problems you said, but not unheard of]

2. Check Idle Control Valve and replace if necessary

3. Check Potentiometer and replace if necessary

how does the idle control valve work on these?my old corsa was a spring method that got dirty and didnt work right, il give it a go thanks for your help!!! james

Take the idle valve of give it a good clean spray wd40 inside to lubricate the spring put it back on reset the ecu and you will be away. Had the same trouble with my GTi done it twice now in 2 years on my car.

looked through the haynes but it show something different i think, iv taken a pic- where is the idle control valve? thanks james

the idle speed control valve is underneath the throttle body bolted to the manifold, bit of a pig to get to. best off going from underneath with an 8mm (i think) spanner.

it works the same as ya corsa ie spring, you can clean it but it wont last too long, best off getting a new one.

if that dopesnt solve the problem, check the PCV valve on the front. underneath the manifold, if that is leaking it will cause rough idling too
