Looking at my first cossie, what do I need to know?

Hi everyone
I'm going to view my first cossie at the weekend but I have a few questions.
What does a -31 actuator do?
What injectors to 2 wheel drive ones run?
What does a 3 bar map sensor do?
What ecu should be fitted and how do I know if it's been mapped for bigger injectors etc?
Are there any rs breakers? PM me if necessary
Sorry about all the questions but I used to have xr4x4s and stuff and been into Subarus (Had a Legacy single turbo) but I'm rusty with Cosworths
Thanks

-31 will allow you to run higher boost when set up with the correct chip and injectors etc
2wd standard injectors are yellow
3 bar map will allow you to run higher boost when set up with the correct chip and injectors etc
ECU should be L1 if in a 3 door or L6 if in a sapphire. Take the lid off the ECU to have a look at the chip. A sticker MAY give you a hint if it's non-standard (along with the colour of the injectors ie light or dark greens). If you're unsure of the quality of a non-standard chip, get the car checked over/set up by someone you trust with experience of cossies.

thanks for the reply
This car is running dark green injectors I believe which to me says it's been chipped because it wouldn't run on a standard map with bigger injectors without overfuelling, or am I wrong? I know Subarus certainly won't.
You're right - it'll also be running a 3 bar MAP sensor, probably a -31 actuator with the injectors and an appropriate chip. If there is a boost gauge fitted, it should be running up to about 22-23psi.

I wouldnt let a stage 3 chip put you off buying the car. TBH you will end up doing that yourself at some point anyway.
Dark green injectors will have 803 on the serial number somewhere and check the map sensor which is under the header tank on the wing. If its a three bar it will be black and grey.
Dont expect the person to let you open the ecu to see the chip, i wouldnt be to happy with that if it was my car. the guy selling should really know whos chip it is.

I'm sorry I've just realised that it just says green injectors not dark greens
The owner doesn't know if the car has been chipped.
What is the likely power output if correctly mapped with that spec on either type of green injectors? From what I remember the Dark greens are the bigger ones.
Thanks

Hello Paul,
Yes dark greens are the large flow injectors, light greens are not used very often so i expect it will be 803 dark greens. If its got dark greens then it will be chiped. You wouldnt run dark greens on the standard map. it wouldnt run right at all.
Correctly setup you could get between 300 and 330 BHP which is more than enough at first and is a very quick car.

Thanks for that. I hadn't heard of light green injectors but I do remember dark greens from my ford days many moons ago
If it is 300bhp I'll be happy because my old Scoob was just over 265bhp
Is there anything else I should know and look for?
Thanks

Check the car over for rust underneath, pay special attention to the rear chassis rails above the rear beam, these seem to rot on most of them.
Other than that just general stuff really, What cossie you looking at a saph?

It's a Sapphire
Can you see the rails without jacking it up?
The chassis number is in the floor next to the drivers seat isn't it? I haven't had a sierra since 2001
Thanks
Thanks
also check chassis number if its a proper cossie it should have a special code in the letters(cant remember wot it is off the top of my head) but if these arent correct its not a proper one(gccb)or something like that also check for cracking across the back in the boot between the rear shocker turrets(my old shell broke across there) at the end of the day m8 if you look after it, it will look after you.....7yrs happy motoring except for the shell job
