as it wont reset i can only guess at the fact there is a short somewhere .. either one of the lamps has given up or the wireing .. remove all the upstairs light bulbs and see if it will reset ..

Take all the lamps out ( bulbs to you) lol and try to reset the breaker, The lamp that blew may still have a fault on it. If it resets then replace the lamps one by one. If you try one and it trips again you found your faulty one

If you have no lamps in and it still won't reset then it's probably a faulty breaker. Write the name of it and the size of it (probably 6 amp) and go to a wholesaler. They are about Ł6. If it's not a faulty breaker then your wiring is faulty and will need a sparky to test it. Hope this helps

Have you got a shaver socket in the bathroom, that may be on the same circuit?

Have any light fittings, (bathroom?) been replaced recently?

Any dimmer switches fitted upstairs?

.

If you have any low voltage lights upstairs then it could be a faulty transformer. Don't remove the lamps just make sure the switch is in the off position. The bottom of the switch should be sticking out if it's off (providing the switch is'nt upside down) If the breaker then resets and it trips when you put the low voltage lights on then it's either a faulty transformer or a dodgy lampholder, these break after a while cos they get fookin hot !!!

It could also be damp / condensation in your bathroom fitting

when you reset the MCB can you feel it blowing back out or does it just feel loose?

if the mcbs OK it should feel possible hear it blowing out.

next turn off all the switches off on the upstairs circuit, this will illuminate part of the circuit. try resetting the MCB.

If it stays in turn the light on then see which one causes it to trip.

if it still goes off you could start finding the fault if you are OK with electrics, not that you should of course.

You could do this by opening a ceiling rose, and taking all the red/browns out of the centre conector so they aint touching, try turning it on, keep doing this until it resets, then turn off and connect another in, hard to explain really.

if your certain it may be the mcb, take the cable out of the mcb and try resetting it, if it does trip its defo the mcb, for a tempoary messure you could put the cable into another MCB of the same current ratting.

Make sure you switch the whole consumer unit OFF when you change/replace the breaker cos depending on what board you have, the screw that holds the breaker in will be live even if the breaker being changed is OFF !

This is because it still has a fault on the circuit. If it's just the upstairs that has gone, then you will have another 6amp breaker in your board for the downstairs. Connect your wire from your faulty circuit into this and see if it still trips. If it does'nt then your breaker is faulty. If it does then some thing is causing it to trip.

You could do this by opening a ceiling rose, and taking all the red/browns out of the centre conector so they aint touching, try turning it on, keep doing this until it resets, then turn off and connect another in, hard to explain really.

The dimmer could now be fooked mate, take it off and keep the ends of the wires away from each other and then see if your breaker resets

ok, turn off the main switch, everthing should go off, take the cover off, find the mcb and take the small cable out, probably on the top, maby the bottom, put away safely.

put cover back on and turn back on, try to reset. If it resets you defo have a faulty circuit.

Yeah but say he did that on all of them and the breaker reset. Then he started to replace them at the end of the circuit and finishing at the first rose that the main first comes into. Then he connected the first rose back up on the circuit. He would'nt know between which 2 lights the fault was would he ! lol

don't connect them all, just one at a time until it lights up, then work on.
